Abstract

This essay examines and compares the quality debates surrounding serialized narratives in nineteenth-century periodicals and in contemporary television. It explores the processes of cultural hierarchization, the media, and the spaces of reception, both aspects that form the basis of the quality debate.

Author Biography

  • Janina Rojek, Philipps-Universität Marburg

    Janina Rojek is a doctoral candidate at the Philipps-Universität Marburg, where she works as a research assistant and lecturer (“wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin“), teaching classes on various topics within American Studies. Her dissertation project examines discourses about seriality from a historical perspective under the title “An Archeology of Seriality.“ Besides seriality, her research interests include postmodernism, contemporary literature, television, the role of the gangster in American fiction, and 9/11 literature.

    In 2011, she received her M.A. degree in North American Studies from the Philipps-Universität Marburg, with a thesis on “‘Narratology Plus X’ in Contemporary U.S. American Drama Serials.“ She studied Anglophone Studies at the Philipps-Universität Marburg and the University of Millersville in Pennsylvania.
